Or, in other words…
How to use the summer to get your child up to speed in reading… and still be speaking to each other in the fall!
It’s the end of the school year, and I am sure there are mixed reviews on how it went. For some there were triumphs in the classroom. For others, it is purely a relief to be able to tick off the last days of the school year because frankly, reading was hard, not fun, and a complete drag. “At least over the summer, there will be NO reading lessons, NO homework, and NO tests! I’m just going to play, play, play!” So thinks the child, right? But for a child who is shaky on basic reading skills or maybe just not reading well at all, the long summer presents the opportunity to forget any progress he or she made during the school year. But oh! The very thought of tutoring over the hot summer days in the very subject that brought them so much grief is just unthinkable for parent AND child!
There is a way your child can get through the summer intact, happy, and light years ahead of where he or she is today!
The easier, more lasting way to bring your child up to speed is through using images. Think about it. “A picture is worth a thousand words.” (Cliché number 1) An image or scene can carry a word, what it means, how it is spelled and store it in long term memory to be retrieved quite easily when needed.
We’ve seen so many comments come through our email account from parents who have seen a very rapid turn-around in their child’s reading ability when they began to introduce words with images.
What can totally happen - In a mother’s own words:
"I wanted to take a moment to share my story. My 5 year old daughter has motor skill delays, visual processing issues and was diagnosed with ADHD all during her kindergarten year. She struggled to learn everything and most of it didn't stick. Her teacher met with me at the end of the third grading period and said based on her most recent evaluation, it would probably be best to retain her. While reading and researching any way I could to help her I came across your website. I worked with my daughter constantly over spring break using SNAPWORDS. By the end of spring break, she not only knew the 25 words she was required to know for kindergarten, but an additional 35!!!! I then purchased your addition and subtraction workbook to see how much I could improve her math skills. Again, wonderful progress. Her teacher just completed 4th quarter midterm testing. She called me personally to tell me that my daughter has made such amazing progress, she feel confident passing her and allowing her to move forward to first grade!! I couldn't be more satisfied with your product and I'm telling everyone about it; family, friends, her occupational therapist, teacher, other parents, groups on Facebook...EVERYONE. I can't thank you enough!

- Another book, Sight Words in Sentences, that will provide your child with “real reading” to practice actually reading his or her sight words
On the backs of the SnapWords® cards are:
- The plain version of the same word as on the front
- A sentence that provides context and meaning for the word and which also explains the picture
- A body gesture that helps active children remember in a way that is most familiar to them.
